Desire, the Starting Point of ALL Achievement

I'm reading Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, again.

The title of chapter 2 is DESIRE and the subtitle is "THE STARTING POINT OF ALL ACHIEVEMENT The First Step toward Riches. After a great talk by one of my mentors, Bill Orender, I have a deeper understanding and appreciation for what Mr. Hill writes.

When desire is present and strong enough the person will "move heaven and earth" to get what they want. They initiate steps to get what they want. They overcome obstacles. They seek out answers to unknowns. Simply put, they invest, time, energy, effort, and money, if needed, to get what they have desire for.

When desire is absent the person's attitude is quite different. They withdraw. They are reluctant to act or initiate action. They don't see any compelling end result to reach towards. They act only when pushed to act and stop when the pushing stops.

So, one of the first things to check for in self or others when considering a new area is DESIRE.
It's also a great test for a person that is struggling to get results in an area they are already involved with.

There are two great quotes at the end of the chapter, "THERE ARE NO LIMITATIONS TO THE MIND EXCEPT THOSE WE ACKNOWLEDGE" and "BOTH POVERTY AND RICHES ARE THE OFFSPRING OF THOUGHT".

We can have what we allow ourselves to have. (Checked your attitude lately?)

This chapter also contains what Mr. Hill subtitled "Six Ways to Turn Desires into Gold", the formula known worldwide, used by thousands of achievers in all sorts of endeavors, to obtain the objects of their desires. Use it throughout the day to stay focused. Apply it to every area of goals and dreams.

Regarding every area of goals and dreams, here is one last set of thoughts (until later) about attitude. The publisher writes,

"The riches within your grasp cannot always be measured in money.

There are great riches in lasting friendships, harmonious family relationships, sympathy and understanding between business associates, and inner harmony which brings peace of mind measurable only in spiritual values."

Keep a Winning attitude! Be rich in every way!

Opportunity

Two shoe salesmen were sent to an underdeveloped country to open new markets.

After arriving and surveying the area the first salesman called back home dismayed saying "Cancel all shipments, these people don't wear shoes".

The other salesman rushed to the phone, called back home excitedly saying, "Quick, rush ship every style we have, these people don't wear shoes"!

Attitudes are contagious, is yours worth catching?

"Some people understand life better and they call some of these people retarded"...
At the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash.  At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win.  All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry.  They slowed down and looked back. Then they all turned around and went back...... every one of them.  One girl with Down's Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it better."  Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood, the cheering went on for several minutes.  People who were there are still telling the story... Why? Because deep down we know this one thing:  What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves.  What matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course.

How do you see it?

Two children were placed in separate rooms. One child was placed in a room with every toy imaginable and the other in a room full of horse manure from floor to ceiling.

The children were left to play for a while.

The first child, when looked in on, was crying profusely. When asked "Why are you crying with all these toys around you? You have everything you could want!", he replied,  "My car broke, the wheel came off my wagon, I fell off my bike",  whine... whine... whine... poor me,  poor me.

The second child had found a shovel and was whistling and singing and digging away in the manure. When asked "What are you so happy about, how can you be whistling and singing in the midst of all this manure?", the child replied, "Well, with all this manure  I figure there must be a pony in here somewhere and I'm going to find it!" 

Attitudes are contagious... is mine worth catching?
